Political Career of Mulayam Singh Yadav

Mulayam Singh Yadav is an Indian politician and the founder-patron of the Samajwadi Party.

He served for three non-consecutive terms as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, and also served as the Minister of Defence, Government of India.

Mulayam Singh Yadav joined politics in 1960 and was first elected as the MLA in the Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh in 1967 and continued serving eight terms.

During the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi in 1975, he was arrested and kept in custody for 19 months.

In 1977, he was appointed as a state minister and in 1980 he became the President of Lok Dal in UP which was later merged in Janata Dal.

From 1982 to 1985, he served as the Leader of Opposition in the UP Legislative Council.
